Wedding stationery is a key part of your wedding planning and wedding day. It’ll help introduce your guests to the style or theme of your wedding day. Choosing a style of stationery can seem a bit of a minefield as there is so much choice with a huge range of styles, colours and finishes. Follow these top tips to help you find your perfect wedding invitations.

What’s your style?

This is one of the first major decisions in your wedding planning. You’ll want to consider the impression you want to make with your wedding invitation & how it will reflect on your wedding as a whole. The style you choose will help determine other important decisions along the way so make sure you choose something that reflects both yours and your fiancés style. Do you want a traditional and fairly classic day or something a little bit different from the norm?

The stationery list

When you’ve decided on your style of wedding stationery you then have to think about all the various elements you’ll need – wedding invitations, RSVP cards, place cards, menu’s etc. Other items can include order of service, table plan, table numbers or names. If your budget is tight stick to the essential items such as your wedding invites, rsvps & find coordinating alternatives for anything else. Tricky items to put together yourself are table plans and order of service. Sometimes getting professional help with these is a good idea.

Placing your order

You’ll need a good idea of numbers. As a rule you should add on about 10% more for any last minute guests you want to invite. It is better to order too many and have some spare than too few. Remember that you don’t need a wedding invite per guest; one per couple or family is standard.

When it comes to order of service you can usually have one between two depending on how formal the style of wedding you’re having.

Wording tips

Pick a font that is legible and don’t make it too small - you want everyone to be able to read it

Things you MUST include within your wedding invitations:

Names of the bride's parents or other hosts

First name of the bride

First name and surname of the groom

Where the ceremony is taking place

Date, month and year of the wedding ceremony

Time of the ceremony

Location of the wedding reception

Address to which guests must reply. Add in a date that your guests have to RSVP by. This makes it easier after the date, to give your friends a call/email to find out if they’re coming or not.

Time to post

We’d recommend sending out your wedding invites about 8-12 weeks before the wedding day, however if you’re getting married in the traditional, summer wedding months you may want to post them earlier to ensure people don’t book their summer holidays! Consider any overseas guests you may want to invite; you will need to account for the delivery time, so it is a good idea to post theirs before anyone else’s to ensure it arrives in good time.

Rainbow weddings

We have noticed from the wedding stationery orders we are receiving this year that many more couples are embracing a mix of bright colours as a theme for their wedding day. It’s so good to see an injection of colour to a wedding day, it brings fun to what can sometimes look very coordinated. Splashes of bright colours within your wedding invitations can then run through to the bridal parties attire and reception detailing. With such a palette you are bound to put smiles on all of your guests’ faces. This explosion of colour is not for the shy and retiring bride, a light-hearted approach is required! This scheme works best in one of two types of venue, a blank canvas (like a marquee or gallery space) or a flower-filled garden, in a more ornate venue the addition of so many colours may just be too much.

The rainbow theme is all about using a lot of colour and mixing it up. Whether it’s bridesmaids in different colours or a mixed flower bouquet. The fantastic thing with this theme is that you don’t have to spend hours matching. Gone is the stress of matching your bridesmaids’ dress fabric to your chair covers, you can relax and embrace the multiple colour vibe. The key is to pick a palette of colours and break them up with a neutral, white or navy can work well. This way you’ll maintain a sophisticated yet playful style, not a ‘playschool’ look!

A great way of incorporating this fantastic theme into your wedding stationery would be to choose a simple silver or gold design and bring the colour in through the ribbon and wording details. Alternatively, go with a wedding invite such as “Lovesong” which already has a mixture of colours. Try adding a couple of different ribbons to your wedding menus and around your bouquet. Lets talk tables!

If you’re having a sit-down meal at your wedding reception, you’ll probably want table centrepieces on each table.

Don’t go for anything that is too big, as remember, your guests will need to see over it!

Avoid tall and wide centrepieces, such as large flower decorations, large vases or candelabras, as your guests will spend most of the evening bending sideways to see the guest opposite!

Plus, there will be lots of other things on the table as well. You’ll have place cards, table cards, wedding menus, wine coolers, water, glasses, salt and pepper and table decorations. So beware of creating too much clutter with a big table centrepiece!

Sometimes less is more. Consider using single stems in multiple glasses, jars or vases for a simple but effective look.

A Seaside Wedding

It’s the question every bride to be asks herself, where do you begin when planning your wedding? Most would say, start with the venue, once that’s booked, the rest will follow. Victoria began with something far more personal. The necklace her fiancé had bought her when they first met became the inspiration for her whole wedding day. The coloured pearls were to be the pallet for her bouquet, bridesmaids and the wonderful tower of cupcakes she had, instead of a traditional wedding cake. She compiled swatches, which she took to each supplier she met, matching details with them and discussing the options. The result was a wedding that had fun and style.

Victoria and Wayne met and live in Brighton, so they were keen to have the seaside as part of their day. With sticks of rock as favors and mini fish and chips, served in cones for the evening guests, the theme matched perfectly with the flexible colour scheme they had devised. Guests were treated to canapés on the restaurant terrace, which over looked the beach and the autumn sun shone all day long.

The stationery Wayne and Victoria picked was our Chorus design. “I loved the design, so different from anything else we had seen and so much like the waves of the sea. We had to have it!” says Victoria. Victoria sent out save the date cards as soon as she new their wedding date. “I was so excited to let everyone know!” she smiles.

In her bouquet, Victoria had considered deep red Calla lilies, but opted for a mixture of roses in the end. She brought the lilies in at the reception; the tables had lilies curled into fishbowl vases, which were beautifully effective. Victoria’s mum made a wonderful bunting banner with the happy couples names for all to see, which flapped in the breeze while everyone sipped champagne and congratulated the happy couple. Congratulations, Wayne and Victoria.

Wedding Ideas Awards 2012

It might have been a couple of weeks ago but we’ve only just recovered. We had the most fabulous evening (as always!) Dressed up and ready to rumble! It seems to be getting bigger and better every year. This year they had a giraffe ice sculpture, oh yes that’s right! Which later on, the bar staff were pouring shots of vodka through, to many a willing guest. The magicians as always were amazing. Our favorite was Marco, he really did blow our minds and even more so when a few more glasses of wine had been consumed. Another toy that we got really carried away with was the Photo booth. Wear the silliest props you can find from the fancy dress box and strike a pose. You get three snaps on each print and get to take it away with you. It really got everyone giggling, especially when you find it in your bag the next day! We’d definitely recommend getting one of these at any future event.

This year we were up for the Best Wedding Stationery category. It’s the 6^th year we’ve been nominated and we’re still so proud and thankful to all our amazing brides who vote for us. Unfortunately the lovely Lucy Ledger pipped us at the post for pole position so we’ve been highly commended this year.

We were lucky to be put on a fantastic table right by the stage so we got a great view of the whole room. The ever so lovely Sandra from WI magazine hosted the table. Emma from Emma Case Photography and her hubbie also joined us. Emma deservedly won Best Wedding Photographer category! There was a lot of whooping from our table when she collected her award! Oliver Launders and his wife Sangeeta who run Olivier Launders Designs were also on our table. If your looking for gorgeous bridal accessories they are a one stop shop!

All in all we had a brilliant time and it’s always great to catch up with the industries cream of the crop. Congratulations to all the winners, you all deserve it! Hope to see you all next year. x

A Gatsby Style Wedding

With Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan hitting the screens in the film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic The Great Gatsby, brides-to-be are certain to be looking at the vintage elegance and the Twenties as a source of inspiration for their big day.

Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann has put together a new version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and has found his Daisy Buchanan in 25-year-old British actress Carey Mulligan. She looks so amazing, so what girl planning her wedding wouldn’t want to look just like her. Pearls, satin, crystals and feathers are all just right for creating the perfect wedding.

Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton) are handsomely suited up in tuxes, so even the guys can look gorgeous with this theme!

In the 1974 version of the film Bruce Dern, Mia Farrow and Robert Redford stared. It was in this version that Theoni Aldredge; innovative costume designer won an Oscar and three Tonys. From what we can see, Baz has created something that looks just as luscious.

In the world of weddings vintage has never gone away, but it is great to see a move away from chintz to the uber glam style that this film inspires. Wedding stationery with low-key colours- creams, golds and mocha tones will set the scene. Wedding Ideas Awards 2012!

So it’s that time of year again already. Wedding Ideas Awards 2012! With a strong six-year history, these awards have become the biggest consumer wedding awards in the UK, with thousands of brides voting for their favourite wedding companies. Businesses of any size have the opportunity to be nominated in any one of the 16 categories. We are there amoungst lots of other lovely wedding stationers!

We’ve been nominated for the Best Wedding Stationery award. It would be so fantastic if we could win this award especially working within these tricky times. It’d just show that all our hard work is worth it!

Harvest festivities

This weekend I went to my friend’s farm for a good knees up of a harvest festival. Gazebos, hay bales, bunting, hand reared hog roast; all topped off with a gallon of home brew! Amazing.

All this merriment got me thinking what a fantastic option this is for a wedding reception.

Its perfect for couples looking for a relaxed, alfresco party vibe. I love the idea of having all your friends and family gathered around the spit filling themselves up with so much crackling they’ll pop!

You can still introduce most themes to this style of a day, especially vintage or retro, as is still so on trend. I would say if your going for a black tie, glamorous affaire this is probably not the right sort of vibe. Imagine how awful it’d be seeing pig fat or apple sauce dribbling down someone’s white bow tie or little bits of hay stuck to someone’s Chanel coated bottom?! Sorry I diverge….

All in all I think this was a good little intro into the kind of style day I’d like to have. Not forgetting the basic key ingredients: great friends and family, good food, booze, music and last but not least masses of jolliness!

Festival fever

So it’s the last festival of the season, sad face, boo hoo. In other news though we’ll be part of it! Bestival held on the Isle of Wight kicks of this Friday 9^th September.

As my 5^th year on the trot I’m well prepared for the stupid amounts of fun, potential mud and general silliness that is bound to ensue. Jill, Mandalay’s managing director however is not so prepared! As her first ever festival, I thought I should help by giving her a few pointers.

1^st up get yourself water resistant, if you don’t need it and the sun is shining, it’s a bonus but if you end up having to swim to the porta loo, at least your covered.

2^nd Little packs of tissues, VITAL.

3^rd A lot of PMA this can help you through anything, no matter the conditions.

All of these logistics are vital but as with all festivals it’s the surroundings, events and people you’re with that help make or break your weekend. I’m bearing this in mind when it comes to organising my wedding. As me and my partner are both festival and outdoor lovers we’re aiming to bring a little snippet of this to our day. Fingers crossed, minus the potential mud, stinking porta loos and grubby looking people. We would however like the fiesta vibes, colourful décor and the coming together with the people you love for a jolly good time.

With so much inspiration available via blogs and websites and with a whole lot of our own imagination we’re starting to build the sort of day we’d like in our heads. Scarily that will soon need to become reality as time is ticking!

Decisions that make you want to scream!

So I thought I was quite decisive, but clearly I was wrong. I’m well aware I’m marrying someone who, when it comes to making even the most minor of decisions in his private life, is utterly useless. Even deciding what to order at a restaurant or what to do at the weekend is a challenge for him! I thought I was the one who was good at the decision making, but no.

Well, our first decision is where to get married, is it just me or is it really damn tricky? So many things to think about, not only cost and logistics, but with family politics in the mix, it’s all a bit too much! Currently my two options are, either in my future mother in laws garden or at a secret garden venue I’ve found. I run the risk of isolating my mum if I go with the family garden, as she may feel she can’t get quite as involved as she’d like to. But then maybe it means more doing it within a family home. I just don’t know what to do! I’ve gone through a whole load of pros and cons for each, but it hasn’t helped.

I think I’m secretly hoping another brilliant venue will just pop on the scene and be utterly perfect, making my decision an absolute no brainer. I just can’t face the thought of going back to the drawing board and trailing through a whole bunch of terrible looking websites. Seriously, wedding venue people out there, your website really is your most valuable selling tool. If it looks bad and doesn’t function properly, it doesn’t matter that you might have the most fantastic venue in reality; most people won’t bother looking any closer. Nice imagery and easy to use sites are vital.

I know I’ve got to get my skates on, as if we want to go with the secret garden it’s getting booked up as I type this. Plus, I’d quite like this one major decision to be done, so I can get on with all the fun stuff!

Colour Trends

What with us being super duper wedding stationers we’re always looking out for the next big thing. What will next seasons big colours be? We know that the wedding industry is generally a bit behind the fashion world when it comes to colour trends, usually up to a year. Colour blocking has been huge in fashion this spring summer so you never know that’s what might be next for us lot. Big bold colours and don’t be afraid to mix em up!

Is it just us or is purple absolutely massive and has been for over a year now! Not sure how much longer it’ll last but it looks like it’s in for the long haul. So to compliment this we’ve got some amazing wedding stationery designs in some seriously sumptuous shades of purple. From vibrant Cadburys purple and deep aubergine to pretty lilacs and vintage lavenders we’ve got them all and some amazing wedding invitation designs to match.

Gather around cats and i'll tell you a story...

My names Katy and I’m a designer at Mandalay Wedding Stationery, here’s a little story for you.

So it’s happened….I’m engaged. I can’t say I hadn’t ever thought or wanted it to happen I just hadn’t expected it, AT ALL!

A very rainy afternoon on Regents Canal, wearing an extremely attractive cagoule and a hung-over death face, he picked his moment. After a few moments of me not quite comprehending what had just come out of his mouth and seeing his scared little face I obviously said a big YES.

It’s a weird feeling. The feeling sick and scared has mostly past (although every now and then I do get a wave of it) and the excitement has replaced them.

He produced out of his pocket not one but two rings and the most fantastic story to boot…..

A few months prior to all of this I’d taken him on a surprise birthday trip to NYC; whilst there we found ourselves in the most amazing flee market in Williamsburg Savings Bank in Brooklyn. In the midst of hunting for goodies I came across an English lady selling vintage jewellery. I tried on a few bits, loved one ring in particular but didn’t think much of it and walked away distracted by the brownies on another table. Whilst totally unbeknown to me he had already been thinking about popping the question for months and had told a number of his friends….all of which had said ‘do it while your away, she’d love it’. He bottled it.

After returning from our trip he decided he needed a ring before he could muster up the courage. He remembered the English lady and how I’d liked all her trinkets. He got in touch, many emails with image attachments followed. She said ‘look, these are the last twelve rings I have’ he said ‘I’ll take them all’. So a package of twelve rings arrived at his work, whilst rummaging through them in the toilet cubical in secret he established that only two out of the twelve we’re worthy.

One of the rings was the one I’d tried on and loved! That’ll be my wedding band. The other ring is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. A 1964 ring which has two bands and a high setting in the middle, the bands flip over so on one side are 9 little diamonds and on the other a garnet. What a boy! Even I hadn’t remembered, I can’t believe he had……..he’s a keeper.

I’m sure along with the rest of the nation you too were glued to the box last Friday to watch Wills and Kate tie the knot the royal way!

Finally seeing that amazing dress put us all out of our misery, she really did look stunning, a true princess. Her sister also gave her a run for her money in another show stopper of an outfit, whilst the boys looked ever so smart in their royal suits. I did want to pick up one of the little soldier page boys and put him in my pocket!

Soon to jet off on their official tropical hideaway honeymoon I bet they can’t wait to relax and kick back with a scrumptious cocktail.

With royal wedding trends set to hit the roof of popularity we thought we’d share a couple of our fave items to bear in mind.

With the last few days feeling like sunshine San Tropez it’s got me all excited for some beach action!

Beach weddings are one of the most desired locations for couples tying the knot. Whether it’s an exotic location abroad, or just good old blighty sea side. There are so many gorgeous shabby chic decoration items and themed stationery to help create a show stopper of a theme.
